What is an HGV Licence?
An HGV licence, also known as an LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) licence, permits drivers to operate vehicles over a certain weight. The term HGV and LGV are often used interchangeably in the UK, as they both refer to vehicles with a gross weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes. The licences are categorised based on the size and type of vehicle, as well as the trailer it tows, if any.
HGV Licence Categories
Category C1: This is the entry-level HGV licence and allows you to drive vehicles weighing between 3.5 tonnes and 7.5 tonnes, with or without a trailer weighing up to 750kg. It’s ideal for smaller commercial vehicles, such as delivery vans or small lorries, and is a great starting point for those new to the industry.
Category C1+E: A step up from the Category C1 licence, this qualification allows you to tow a larger trailer. With a Category C1+E licence, you can operate vehicles in the 3.5 to 7.5-tonne range, towing trailers weighing over 750kg, provided the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer doesn’t exceed 12 tonnes.
Category C: Often referred to as the Class 2 licence, this category is for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes, with a trailer weighing up to 750kg. It’s a common licence for drivers operating rigid-body lorries used in construction, logistics, or local deliveries. If you’re planning a long-term career in HGV driving, a Category C licence is an excellent option.
Category C+E: Known as the Class 1 licence, this is the highest qualification for HGV drivers. A Category C+E licence allows you to drive articulated lorries or heavy vehicles with detachable trailers, with no upper weight limit. This licence is essential for long-haul drivers transporting large loads across the country or internationally. It offers the broadest career opportunities in the industry.
Which Licence Should You Choose?
The right licence for you depends on your career aspirations. If you plan to start small, a Category C1 or C1+E licence may be sufficient. However, for those looking to drive larger vehicles or enter long-haul transport, a Category C or C+E licence will be necessary.
