Information on HGV Vehicles:

Firstly, a HGV vehicle is a mechanically propelled road vehicle that is designed to carry goods and has a maximum weight of more than 3,500 kilograms when carrying a load – potentially also known as a ‘large goods vehicle’. They are often taken on longer drives too. Many different types are used such as dry and consumer goods lorries, livestock or refrigerated trucks, flatbed lorries, and special-purpose HGVs. 

In order to obtain an HGV licence in the UK, you must first apply for a provisional licence and pass a medical check. Next, you’ll need to pass a theory test, which includes multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test. After that, you complete driver CPC training and practical lessons, learning how to handle and manoeuvre the vehicle. Once you’re trained, you take and pass a practical driving test, which includes vehicle checks and on-road driving. After passing, you receive your full HGV licence. You must complete 35 hours of periodic CPC training every 5 years to keep it valid. Additional qualifications, like ADR for hazardous goods, can be obtained if needed.
