1. How long does it take to get my HGV licence?
It depends - mostly on how fast you want to go. Here’s a rough breakdown: Medical and application: 1–2 weeks Theory test: Bookable within 2–3 weeks Practical training: Usually 5 days Final test: Add another week or so
All in all, from zero to fully licensed can take 8–10 weeks. Faster if you’re proactive and flexible.
2. Do I need a Driver CPC?
Yes. If you’re driving for work. The Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is legally required for professional HGV and PCV drivers.
You’ll need:
Initial CPC if you’re new
35 hours of Periodic CPC every 5 years to stay compliant
At CTT Ltd, we run both types and yes, we make it as painless as possible.
3. Can I train in an automatic lorry?
Absolutely. Most modern lorries are automatic these days and our fleet reflects that. Unless you passed your car test in an automatic, your HGV licence will still cover manuals too. So no stress there.
4. What areas do you cover?
We’re based at Wing Airfield (just outside Leighton Buzzard), but we train people from:
Bedford
Milton Keynes
Luton
Oxford
Aylesbury
Basically, if you’re within reach of M1 junctions 9-12, you’re in our catchment.
5. Do I need experience to start training?
Not at all. We work with complete beginners every week - people changing careers, returning to work, or just chasing a new challenge. Our instructors are patient, plain-speaking, and don’t do the shouty thing.
6. How much does it cost?
It varies by course, but we always aim to be competitive. We’ll give you a no-pressure quote, explain exactly what’s included, and let you decide. No hidden extras, no upselling.
7. Is it hard to pass?
