Class 1, Class 2 & Class 3 Licencing: What Are The Differences?

Thinking of upgrading your HGV licence to Class 1? This blog aims to explore the differences between the different classes of license and what kinds of vehicles each would allow you to drive and how it could benefit your career.

Class 3 Licence (Category C1 Licence)

A Class 3 licence is the lowest class licence for HGVs. Most people start with their Class 3 to develop experience and work their way up to a Class 1 if they wish. A Class 3 licence allows you to drive rigid vehicles only, meaning the truck and cargo area are permanently attached (no trailer).
Typical vehicles you can drive with this licence include tipper lorries, delivery trucks, bin lorries and other medium freight vehicles. These vehicles are mainly used for regional deliveries, construction and municipal services.

Class 2 Licence (Category C Licence)

A Class 2 licence sits between Classes 1 and 3, acting as a stepping-stone for drivers who wish to progress their commercial driving career. This licence allows you to drive larger rigid vehicles, bigger than a Class 3 but still without a trailer.
Some examples of vehicles you can drive with a Class 2 licence are fire engines, cement mixers and large delivery lorries. These lorries are often used for medium to heavy duty deliveries and construction or municipal work.

Class 1 Licence (Category CE Licence)

Class 1 licences are the highest HGV driving licences in the UK, allowing drivers to drive large articulated vehicles, also known as HGVs with trailers. The typical vehicle set up normally uses a tractor with a large trailer attached, the gross vehicle weight can exceed 40 tonnes. These vehicles are often used for long-haul transport, cross country freight, container shipping and large scale logistical operations. As a Class 1 licence is more advanced, you normally need experience at least at a Class 3 level to progress to this licence.
